Organize calendar spuds in the Publishing Control Panel

After you publish a calendar, the Publishing Control Panel for the calendar becomes the central location for your publishing settings and calendar spuds. It contains sections for:

• Publish settings, where you can:
  • See a summary of and edit your existing publish settings.
  • Edit publishing settings, color and font schemes, calendar event colors, and global styles.
  • Preview all of the spuds you have set up for your calendar.
• Selecting and customizing the views for your main calendar spud and event details.
• Adding, removing, and customizing control and promotion spuds.
• Adding and customizing and event submission form (for accounts that are enabled for this feature).
• Adding, removing, and customizing email spuds.
• Enabling and customizing popup spuds.
• Customizing your hosted calendar page on the Trumba server.
• Customizing your default calendar feeds.

What's the difference between a control and promotion spud?

Publish settings

The Publish Settings tab displays a summary of the calendar settings that you selected in the Publish Settings page. In this section of the control panel you can do the following:

• Click Edit Publish Settings to edit the settings listed in the summary.
• Click Edit Styles & Icons to change the color and font schemes, to customize the global styles for calendar views (templates) and spuds, or to choose the icons used throughout your calendar (including various calendar views, event detail pages, popup views, and event action pages).
• Click Edit Calendar Colors to select custom event colors that are different than the ones you chose for the calendar in the Trumba editing environment.
• Click Preview All Spuds to open a page that shows all of the spuds that are included in the Publishing Control Panel using your current style and behavior settings.

Control spuds

You use control spuds on the same page that contains your main calendar spud. Control spuds are used to change the state of the main calendar spud. For example, to change the calendar's time zone, change the view, or filter events.

The control spuds that appear on the Control Spuds tab of the Publishing Control Panel by default are the spuds that Trumba Connect displays on your hosted calendar page (in addition to your main calendar spud and the date finder spud which is a promotion spud).

Promotion spuds

You use promotion spuds on pages of your website that do not contain your main calendar spud. Promotion spuds attract the attention of your site visitors and direct your visitors to your main calendar page.

You add a promotion spud in the Publishing Control Panel to edit its styles and settings and to get the script code that you paste into the web page on your site in which you want to place the spud.

While the Date Finder promotion spud is a popular spud to display on a home page, the following image shows a website that uses the upcoming events promotion spud, which we've outlined in red.

Generate the code to use spuds in your website

On the Control Spuds and Promotion Spuds tabs of the Publishing Control Panel, you can add spuds and then edit their styles and settings. Based on your settings, Trumba Connect generates the script that you use to place the spud into your web pages. When a spud is in the Publishing Control Panel, you can use its code to embed it into your site, so that it shows custom styles and settings that you define.

To add a control or promotion spud to your Publishing Control Panel

1. On the Control Spuds or Promotion Spuds tab, click Add a Control Spud or Add a Promotion Spud.
2. In the Add Spud page, select a spud that you want to add, and then click OK.
3. If you added a control spud, you may see an Edit Settings page. Select the settings and styles you want for the spud.

   If you added a promotion spud, in the Edit Settings page that appears, select the start and end dates, the number of events you want to appear in the spud, the timeframe you want the spud to cover, and whether to show multi-day events on all dates on which they occur.

4. The spud appears on the Control Spuds tab or Promotion Spuds tab, along with the script you use to place it in your web page. From there, you can customize or preview the spud.

   If you preview a spud, its appearance reflects the current style settings.

   Note Promotion spuds display events that meet the requirements set in both the End date and Events per page fields. For example, if you set the end date to be Current day +180 days and number of events to 12, and the number of events on your calendar during the next 180 days is greater than 12, the spud will display only 12 events. On the other hand, if the next event starts 181 days from the current date, no events will appear in the spud.

To remove a control or promotion spud from the Publishing Control Panel

• In the Publishing Control Panel on the Control Spuds or Promotion Spuds tab, for the spud you want to remove, click the Remove link.

  The spud and its script code are removed from the control panel.

  Caution If a spud you remove from the Publishing Control Panel is embedded into any of your web pages, the spud will still appear on your web pages, but it will revert to the default styles and settings. If you add the spud back to the control panel, you will have to reset your custom settings manually.

Customize control and promotion spud styles

By default, spuds in the Publishing Control Panel inherit the global color and font schemes you selected for the calendar (by clicking Edit Styles & Icons on the Publishing Settings tab in the Publishing Control Panel). If the global color or font scheme doesn't give your spuds the look you want for integrating them into your website, you can edit each spud's styles more extensively.

To edit the styles for a control or promotion spud

1. In the Publishing Control Panel, on the Control Spuds or Promotion Spuds tab, for the spud you want to customize, click Edit Settings & Styles.

   The Edit Settings & Styles page contains the local, spud-specific settings that you can customize.

2. Assign values to the appropriate settings as you would in a CSS file. Settings that inherit parent or global styles are indicated.

   Caution If you change a style that is included in a font or color scheme, changing the font or color scheme will overwrite your local change. Learn more…
