The P-40 Warhawk over China

Author Carl Molesworth has written several books on the P-40 Warhawk, including “Sharks Over China: The 23rd Fighter Group in World War II.” The 23rd was the successors to the American Volunteer Group, the famous Flying Tigers. Molesworth will share stories of the plane and the men who flew them. An autograph session will follow the program. Program is Free with Museum Admission. Film: Raid on Entebbe

The 1978 made for television movie “Raid on Entebbe” depicts the true story of the 1976 Israeli government raid on the Entebbe Airport in Uganda to save Israeli and Jewish hostages from pro-Palestinian terrorists who hijacked an international jet. The raid, code name “Operation Thunderbolt,” became one of the most successful hostage rescues in modern history. The Museum of Flight will screen “Raid on Entebbe” on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 2 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 7 at 11 a.m. in the William M. Allen Theater. The screenings are in conjunction with a lecture by Capt. Arieh Oz, one of the Operation Thunderbolt pilots, on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 2 p.m. “Raid on Entebee” won the 1978 Golden Globe for best made for television movie. Film is Free with Museum Admission. Captain Arieh Oz: Pilot for Humanity

Captain Oz was one of the pilots in the Entebbe Raid, an Israeli military operation that came to be seen as "one of civilization's greatest victories over terrorism," and pilot of an El Al 747 that carried the largest number of passengers ever put on a single airplane during Operation Solomon, which rescued over 14,000 Ethiopian Jews. He will talk about his experience of being a pilot during some of Israel's most important and daring humanitarian missions. An autograph session will follow the program. Boeing B-29 “Superfortress” Crew Panel

The Boeing B-29 was one of the largest aircraft to see combat in World War II and the Korean War. This heavy, high-altitude bomber played important roles in both conflicts, including the fire-bombing of Tokyo late in War World II. This panel will consist of crew members who flew in different roles in this historic aircraft. The panel will include Lt. Col. Walter Sherrell. Program is Free with Museum Admission. Association of Space Explorers Planetary Congress XXI

The Association of Space Explorers is a non-profit professional and educational organization of over 300 space travelers (astronauts and cosmonauts) from 32 nations. Their 21st annual congress will be held in Seattle Sept. 15-19. This year’s theme is “Exploring Space, Inspiring Planetary Stewardship.” The opening ceremonies will be held at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Seattle at 9 a.m. A limited number of seats will be available to the public. A press conference will follow the ceremony. Press credentials and requests for interviews can be made through The Museum of Flight’s public relations office. At 2 p.m. in The Museum of Flight’s William M. Allen Theater, the Congress will hold a public program on preserving the environment through space photography and research. It will feature Apollo astronaut Bill Anders and will include all of the congress participants. Program is free to the public, but seating will be limited. Secret and Dangerous: The Son Tay P.O.W. Raid Lecture and Book Signing

Air Commando pilot Bill Guenon has written the only first-hand account of the incredible 1970 raid to free American P.O.W.s held deep in North Vietnam. Guenon, call sign, "Cherry One," flying his C-130 low, slow...20 knots below landing speed...in the dark of night operating in radio-silence, led six rescue helicopters to Son Tay. His book, Secret and Dangerous: Night of the son Tay POW Raid, with 70 rare pictures, will be on sale in the Store and Bill will be available after the talk to sign books. Northwest Historical Miniatures Gaming Exhibition

The Museum welcomes back the Northwest Historical Miniatures Gaming Society for an exhibition of their fascinating hobby, which combines the challenges of fine model-making and sophisticated strategy game-playing. Several games will be demonstrated at the show; in addition to games featuring aerial combat, there will be a 1930s air racing game, and tables for earthbound battles. Visitors are encouraged to participate in the game play but can also just watch the action or visit the society’s information table to see more amazing miniatures and learn about the group and the hobby. The Boeing 707: Fifty Years of the Jet Age in Commercial Aviation

During the mid-1950s, Boeing made a risky gamble to redesign the “Dash 80” into a passenger jet airliner. Pan Am flew the new Boeing 707 on its first commercial flight from New York to Paris on October 26, 1958. Join us for panel of those who were involved in the introduction of this historic aircraft into commercial aviation. The panel will include Joe Sutter, 707 Chief Aerodynamicist; Brien Wygle, 707 Test Pilot; Peter Morton, 707 Training Instructor; Herb Stevenson, 707 Captain for Pan Am. 368th Fighter Group Panel Discussion

PLEASE NOTE EARLY STARTING TIME! Five P-47 Thunderbolt combat pilots from the 368th Fighter Group will once again join us for stories from this famous group. The 368th was one of the most productive fighter groups during the war and recieved the Presidential Unit Citation. It was comprised of the 395th FS “Panzer Dusters,” 396th FS “Thunder Bums,” and 397th FS “Jabo Angels.” The 368th provided air cover for First and Third Army sweeps across Europe. In addition to spearheading the use of pilots as forward air controllers, the 368th was the first unit to first to drop napalm bombs, dive-bomb V-1 “buzz bomb” sites, support the disembarking troops on D-Day, and the first to operate missions from and to be based on the continent. The 368th recorded 149 aerial victories, the most among Ninth AF P-47 units. The panel discussion is moderated by MOF docent, Dr. Timothy M. The Airplane: How Ideas Gave Us Wings. Lecture and Book Signing with Jay Spenser

Noted aviation author Jay Spenser is a former assistant curator at the National Air and Space Museum and a former Curator at the Museum of Flight. Interpreting flight through the written word has been the focus of his professional career. He will discuss his new book on the history of the airplane, and will be available to sign books afterwards. The Museum of Flight is the home of the American Fighter Aces Association, founded to recognize the 1,442 combat pilots that received a special distinction of becoming an ace by destroying 5 or more hostile aircraft The Association is honored to sponsor a panel of aces and combat pilots to share the stories of heroism from these remarkable men. Veterans Day Program

Please join the Museum in recognizing the contributions of America’s veterans at our annual Veterans Day Ceremony to be held in the Side Gallery. The ceremony will be complemented once again by a performance by the Boeing Employees’ Concert Band and special programs will be held for youth, families and adults. On Veterans Day all U.S. veterans and current U.S. military personnel will be admitted to the Museum free of charge. An autograph session immediately following the ceremony.
