The traveling exhibit "Forgotten Gateway" chronicles the Port of Galveston’s largely forgotten history as a major gateway to American immigration from 1845 to 1924. "Forgotten Gateway" builds on a growing scholarly and public interest in the history of migration patterns to America and Galveston’s place as one of the nation’s top immigrant ports in that history.
This exhibit is the first of its kind to explore Galveston’s legacy as a port of entry on a national scale. It will bring to light the little-known yet rich era of Galveston’s history and just how important it was to the growth of Texas and the American Midwest.
Long before Ellis Island processed its first immigrant, Galveston was a port of entry for hundreds of thousands of immigrants. While the New York counterpart made it a natural port for Europeans, Galveston attracted a diverse group of people from Europe, Mexico, South and Central America and even Asia. From a goliath bird eating tarantula to a hefty lubber grasshopper, Moody Gardens visitors will have a chance to meet a wide variety of unique spineless insects this summer. The Rainforest Pyramid now features JitterBug! Spineless Wonders of the World. The special exhibit includes both local and exotic bugs along with interesting facts about each critter.
Inside the Rainforest Pyramid, visitors will see over 1,000 species of floras and faunas of the rainforests of Asia, Africa and the Americas as well as colorful macaws and fish. As a new feature, there will be tropical thunder several times a day with immersive sound effects and misty showers so real that guests may want to go on an adventure through the forest in raincoats. Rainforest presentations will also take place every hour between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily discussing all aspects of the rainforest from plants, conservation efforts to insects and animals.

Moody Gardens will feature a special exhibit just in time for the summer vacation season. “Amazeing” Butterflies will feature a maze and free-flying live butterflies. The exhibit is designed to teach visitors the life cycle, variety of species and survival challenges of the colorful insects.
“Butterflies have been at the top of the request list as something that our guests have wanted to see here at Moody Gardens,” said John Zendt, Moody Gardens CEO and president. “Along with the other unique attractions that Moody Gardens has to offer, we hope this will add value to the guest experience.”

Galveston has always possessed remarkable vitality despite the various forces and events that have challenged it. Its citizens were the definition of true Galvestonians whose love and respect for the coastal city's mercantile and cultural life persevered despite the environmental threats of the Gulf of Mexico.
The "Foundations of Influence" exhibit is located on the third floor of the Rosenberg Library in the Hallway Gallery. Portraits of well known members of Galveston families line the walls, and special belongings are displayed in the elegant hallway cases.
In 1838 Michel B. Menard founded the Galveston City Company on "one league and a labor of land" on the eastern end of Galveston Island. With this company the first citizens of Galveston issued deeds to plots of land to investors, and the City of Galveston was chartered in 1839. As the principal port and gateway to the Southwest, Galveston was able to profit from shipping, mercantile goods, banks, and transportation.

"Pottery of the Americas: An Exhibit of Pre-Columbian, Mexican, and Native American Pottery" is now on display in the third floor Hutchings Gallery of the Rosenberg Library. This exhibition explores the various processes and techniques used to manufacture pottery, the common materials used, and the historic cultures from South America, Mexico, and the American Southwest. The featured artifacts include a stunning assemblage of pottery wares dating from 300 AD through the 20th century, and are a rare opportunity to see part of the museum’s permanent collection that are not closely connected to the Galveston area.
The production of pottery is one of the oldest forms of ancient art as civilizations have used durable, waterproof containers for centuries. Fragments of pottery, called potsherds, are one of the most common finds discovered on archaeological sites. Once upon a time, humans discovered the practicality of using natural materials to protect their feet from harsh environments. From bark, leather, and wood, women have taken the function of footwear to another level and have developed expressive styles that have since come full swing.
Did you know that as late as the 1850s some shoes were still made on absolutely straight lasts? This meant that there was no difference between the right and the left shoes. Though convenient when waking up in the morning, breaking in a new pair of shoes was not easy.
Victorian morality of the late 19th century required women’s ankles to be covered to protect them from men’s prying eyes. The priority of this time was function, not fashion, but the rare glimpse of the exposed foot while walking inspired boot makers to adorn their creations with silk fabrics, lace, buttons and metallic thread embroidery.

What do a black-and-white coal miner’s quilt, an international flag tobacco-silk quilt, a Texas Two-Step quilt with a backing made from feed sacks, and a red album-block friendship quilt have in common? They are all part of the private collection of quilter and collector Rebekah Williams Cessna, of Missouri City, Texas. She has loaned 43 of them to Galveston Historical Foundation for its next quilt exhibit, “Pieces of the Past: The Rebekah Cessna Quilt Collection” which is now on display at at GHF’s headquarters in the 1861 U.S. Custom House, 502 20th St. Galveston.
The exhibit is free and open to the public weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a special showing from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on August 28, the evening of downtown Galveston’s ArtWalk. The exhibit is scheduled to run through September 24.

Bogan Gallery presents a new exhibition by John Van Domelen entitled "Black and White and Wood All Over." On view July 10 thru August 21.
John Van Domelen's grandfather introduced him to the beauty of crafted wood. Since then, he has taken his own inspiration and methodologies and combined them with a concern for the natural environment. He uses cutoffs and visits tree trimmers and housing developments to recycle wood destined for a landfill. Some of his works are made from exotic woods, some from wood collected in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike. He both carves by hand and turns with a lathe, and uses a variety of additional processes including burning and dying. His hope is to inspire a future generation to explore the artistic properties of wood.
Bogan Gallery is located at 2217 Postoffice Street, and is owned and operated by Susan Bogan. Mrs. Bogan is an Art Historian and a university Art History instructor who has left the academic world to open the gallery in Galveston.

Colonel William Lewis Moody began the family’s banking heritage by serving as president of the National Bank of Texas, which was the second bank established in the state receiving its charter on March 6, 1866. His son, W. L. Moody, Jr. continued the family tradition with the founding of City National Bank in 1907 and the establishment of W. L. Moody and Company Bankers, Unincorporated in 1916. W. L. Moody, Jr.’s daughter, Mary Moody Northen, and his grandson, Robert L. Moody, Sr. upheld the family banking tradition. The guided tour of the Moody Mansion includes a history of the Moody family in the context of late 19th and 20th century Galveston and Texas.
The furnishings are all original to the family and to the house. Each room on the main floor is decorated in a different style. The house was meticulously restored in the late 1980s and first opened to the public in 1991. The tour lasts about one hour. Pre-arranged group tours for both adults and young people are welcome.
The Mansion's current exhibit is "Auto Fever," housed in a new garage facility a few steps from Moody Mansion’s back door. Centerpieces of the exhibit are three restored automobiles that belonged to members of the Moody family, surrounded by exhibits on the impact of the automobile on the Moody Family, Galveston, Texas and the United States. This separate exhibit facility is included in the price of admission to Moody Mansion.

The Bishop's Palace is one of the best known and most widely recognized historic attractions in the country. It is listed by the U. S. Department of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark, and has been named by the American Institute of Architects as the 14th most important Victorian building in America.
Galveston’s grandest and best-known building, the Bishop’s Palace is an ornate delight of colored stone, intricately carved ornaments, rare woods, stained-glass windows, bronze dragons and other sculptures, luxury materials and furnishings, and impressive fireplaces from around the world (including one lined with pure silver!).
Built by lawyer Colonel Walter Gresham and designed by Nicholas Clayton, Galveston’s premier architect, this Victorian castle was cited by the American Institute of Architects as one of the 100 most important buildings in America. The home was built from 1886 to 1892.

Galveston Arts Center is pleased to present Dan Rizzie: The Flatbed Years, Selected Prints 1993–2009, featuring work produced by the former Texas artist at Austin’s Flatbed Press. Scrolling arabesques, blackbirds and flowers populate the visual vocabulary of Dan Rizzie’s art. The son of a cultural officer for the US State Department, Rizzie lived in such exotic lands as India, Jamaica, Egypt and Jordan as a child. He continues to be an avid traveler and collector of paper ephemera, old letters, and ledger paper that find places in his collages and prints, markers of a forgotten past. The guided tour of the Moody Mansion includes a history of the Moody family in the context of late 19th and 20th century Galveston and Texas.
The furnishings are all original to the family and to the house. Each room on the main floor is decorated in a different style. The house was meticulously restored in the late 1980s and first opened to the public in 1991. The tour lasts about one hour. Pre-arranged group tours for both adults and young people are welcome.
The Mansion's current exhibit is "Auto Fever," housed in a new garage facility a few steps from Moody Mansion’s back door. Centerpieces of the exhibit are three restored automobiles that belonged to members of the Moody family, surrounded by exhibits on the impact of the automobile on the Moody Family, Galveston, Texas and the United States. This separate exhibit facility is included in the price of admission to Moody Mansion.

The guided tour of the Moody Mansion includes a history of the Moody family in the context of late 19th and 20th century Galveston and Texas.
The furnishings are all original to the family and to the house. Each room on the main floor is decorated in a different style. The house was meticulously restored in the late 1980s and first opened to the public in 1991. The tour lasts about one hour. Pre-arranged group tours for both adults and young people are welcome.
The Mansion's current exhibit is "Auto Fever," housed in a new garage facility a few steps from Moody Mansion’s back door. Centerpieces of the exhibit are three restored automobiles that belonged to members of the Moody family, surrounded by exhibits on the impact of the automobile on the Moody Family, Galveston, Texas and the United States. This separate exhibit facility is included in the price of admission to Moody Mansion.

Tim, is an up-and-coming executive who has just received his first invitation to the "dinner for idiots," a monthly event hosted by his boss that promises bragging rights to the exec that shows up with the biggest buffoon. Tim's fiancee, Julie, finds it distasteful and Tim agrees to skip the dinner, until he bumps into Barry--an IRS employee who devotes his spare time to building elaborate taxidermy mouse dioramas--and quickly realizes he's struck idiot gold.
