Geometric Threads: Moving Between Dimensions
The expert artisans who make our clothes and furniture use geometry everyday. See master upholsterer Mike Boloyan and an expert clothing designer share the skills and techniques they use to transform two-dimensional fabrics into striking, three-dimensional pieces of furniture or custom-made couture. Afterward, an exploration of cartography will reverse the process—flattening three-dimensional terrain into a two-dimensional map.

McBean Theater, Noon, 2, and 4 p.m.
Adventures in Perception (1979, 26 min.), by Han van Gelder, is an introduction to the surreal world of M.C. Escher and his ingenious play with geometric shapes, interlocking patterns, false perspectives, convex/concave shapes, morphing forms, figure/ground reversals, and illusions within illusions. The master craftsman himself makes an appearance carving an intricate braid of twisting serpents. This print is part of the Exploratorium’s 16mm Film Collection.
Fetch (2001, 5 min.), by Nina Paley, is a funny and kinetic exploration of space involving an animated dog chasing a ball. The lively soundtrack was composed by local musician Nik Phelps and The Sprockett Ensemble.

Living Tissue: Faculty and Students from California College of the Arts Create Fragile, Temporary Gowns from Pattern-Makers Tissue
When Amy Williams, chair of Fashion at San Francisco’s California College of Arts wanted to free the creative spirit of her students and get them to think spatially in the moment about designing, she invented an ingenious way to do that — fast creation of opulent gowns, made in a day with just pattern makers tissue and tape. The result is not only an education for students, but also a playful and performative experience in the process of fashion creation. The museum will be filled with pink as students from the California College of the Arts, working with experienced faculty, use the humblest of materials, a few simple tools, their imagination and basic apparel construction techniques to create fabulous paper gowns in just one afternoon. Bring your questions and prepare to be inspired as you gain new insight into the design and construction of your favorite frock.

Exploratorium After Dark: Nomadic Communities
A cutting-edge evening series for adults
The first Thursday of every month
6:00–10:00 p.m.
Q: What do a mobile diner, an annual arts event in the desert, urban foragers, and bay creatures that arrived by ballast water have in common?
A: Their itinerant circumstances are often the source of their creativity, survival, and even evolution.
While true nomads are rare in industrialized countries, hybrids of whimsical and economically inventive itinerancies are evolving here in the Bay Area. From the underground food cart phenomenon to Wonderarium, a giant floating terrarium planned for Oakland’s Lake Merritt, the Bay Area tends to incubate peripatetic creatures and cultures that in turn shape life here and beyond in unusual ways.
Join us for a drink and meet ‘Mayor of Black Rock City’ Harley Dubois and find out how the infrastructure for Burning Man’s fifty thousand celebrants is built each year in the northern Nevada desert. Chat with platinum-wigged waitresses at the Dust City Diner, a 40s style…

Geometric Threads: Symmetry, Topology, and Handmade History
This summer, experience the breadth and beauty of geometry found in traditional handicrafts and contemporary design with skilled artisans who demonstrate the mathematics inherent in crafts practiced across the globe. Offered in conjunction with our new Geometry Playground exhibition. Today we look at Symmetry, Topology, and Handmade History.
We may think of reuse, recycling, and upcycling as contemporary ideas. But textiles were once made by hand and considered much more valuable than they are today. The folk arts of lacemaking, marlinspike seamanship (ropemaking), and Japanese temari (embroidered balls) produce extraordinary symmetries and pattern; they also evolved as creative solutions for repair or reuse. Crochet, on the other hand, emerged as a less expensive alternative to other forms of lacemaking with the advent of machine-made thread in the early 1800s.
Though each of these techniques developed from different needs and influences, they all begin with a simple string or cord, and result in an…

Geometric Threads: Patterns and Tessellations
Tessellations—perfectly fitting patterns of shapes—appear in honeycombs, fish scales, pine cones, and a myriad other natural forms. They are also a popular element in many human-made designs, such as those found in Islamic art and architecture. The complex artistry of Moroccan tile mosaics, quilts, and Hawai’ian kapa cloth (created from the pounded and fermented bark of the paper mulberry tree) reflect a variety of intricate geometric designs.
Watch master quilters, an expert tiler, and Hawai’ian kapa cloth artist Wendeanne Ke-aka Stitt skillfully arrange simple shapes to create exquisite patterns—then get a taste for tessellating by fitting fabric shapes together into your own mesmerizing designs.

Speaking of Music Rewind
Download a gem from the Exploratorium’s rich musical history -- the highly regarded Speaking of Music series, which was co-presented by the Exploratorium, Charles Amirkhanian and KPFA radio, and produced by Mr. Amirkhanian from 1983 to 1992. We publish one episode a month for the entire 40th anniversary year, concluding in November 2010. This month’s artist is Meredith Monk.
In the series, conversations between Mr. Amirkhanian and prominent musicians and composers took place before a live audience in the Exploratorium’s McBean Theater or in the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre. The conversations, which were often interspersed with brief performances, focused on the creative process, and there was always ample time for the audience to interact with the artists. The programs, which featured artists such as Laurie Anderson, Brian Eno, and Phillip Glass, were recorded and later broadcast by KPFA.
We’re releasing these archived files as a podcast series called “Speaking of Music Rewind,” which will launch with…

10/10/10 Special Event
In 1977 Ray and Charles Eames made a nine-minute film called Powers of Ten that influenced the way millions of people see the world. This cinematic journey out to the edge of space and time and then back again deep into a carbon atom located in the hand of a man napping at a picnic has inspired artists, educators, scientists and individuals to create exhibitions, paintings, educational activities as well as a host of cinematic homages and affectionate parodies.
Charles and Ray Eames were arguably the most important and egalitarian American designers of the 20th century and contributed to the fields of education, architecture, design, manufacturing, cinema and photography.
“Take your pleasure seriously,” is a famous statement of Charles Eames and we intend to do just that on October 10, 2010 by celebrating the Powers of Ten with activities, demonstrations, conversations, and of course, films, exploring the relative scale of things, and the philosophy and ideas of Charles and Ray Ea…

Speaking of Music Rewind: Steve Reich
In celebration of the Exploratorium's 40th Anniversary, we've been combing through our archives and revisiting our rich history. One gem we discovered is the highly regarded Speaking of Music series, which was co-presented by the Exploratorium, Charles Amirkhanian and KPFA radio, and produced by Mr. Amirkhanian from 1983 to 1992. In the series, conversations between Mr. Amirkhanian and prominent musicians and composers took place before a live audience. Today, we present Steve Reich. We are releasing these archived files as a podcast series called "Speaking of Music Rewind." We'll publish one episode a month for the entire 40th anniversary year, concluding in November 2010.
With a handful of exhibits and a $50,000 grant from the San Francisco Foundation, the Exploratorium’s founder, Dr. Frank Oppenheimer, opened the doors of the museum in 1969 without any fanfare. In the forty years since, the museum has grown enormously, adding groundbreaking educational programs plus playful, thought-provoking…
