Barbara Kimmelman's Keynote address to New Students

2008 Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award winner, Dr. Barbara Kimmelman, will a keynote address to the incoming class of new students on Friday, August 22nd at 1:30pm in the Gallagher Athletic, Recreation and Convocation Center. Professor Kimmleman will speak about Jane Kramer’s book, “Whose Art Is It” which was given to new students over the summer as they were on campus for several START sessions. The book addresses interesting issues public funding of art and representation (who is entitle to represent who? for example) among other compelling issues. The book examines a particular instance of public art in New York City in the early 1990’s, when John Ahearn, an affluent white artist in a black and Hispanic neighborhood in the Bronx chooses as his subjects individuals who were “not the best of the neighborhood”; a junkie, a hustler and a street kid for a series of public sculptures commissioned for the intersection outside a new police precinct.
