Lecture: “War’s Waste: The Rehabilitation of Disabled Soldiers in American History”

Campus Activities SPEAKER: Beth Linker, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, Department of the History and Sociology of Science, University of Pennsylvania DESCRIPTION: With the number of casualties from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan mounting every day, Americans will be forced to come to terms with the tens of thousands of men and women permanently disabled from the conflicts for many years ahead. At the moment, it is almost universally accepted that the proper social and cultural response to the wounded is to encourage them to undertake extended hospital stays, undergo extensive physical rehabilitation, and (when needed) make use of state-of-the-art prostheses—all with an eye to facilitating the injured soldier's swift return to a “normal” civilian life. While supervised long-term medical care is part-and-parcel of today’s U.S. veteran welfare system, this was not always the case. Rather, the idea of rehabilitating maimed soldiers arose at a particular time in our nation's history, during the First World War. University of Pe… Thursday, August 26, 2010, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM. Science Cafe: Decision Making Under Risk and Uncertainty

Community Events Decision making is using information to guide behavior among multiple possible courses of action—to move in some direction, to ingest something or not, or to favor one romantic partner over another. Such choices determine the way an organism makes its way in the world, and hence its degree of success in meeting the challenges of life. Join Assistant Professor of Psychology, Andreas Wilke, Clarkson University, for an interdisciplinary exploration into judgment and decision-making research and learn why the decision strategies modern humans (unconsciously) use are a result of the interaction between their evolved psychology and the environment in which they live. For a full schedule of talks, visit http://www.clarkson.edu/ScienceCafe. Wednesday, September 22, 2010, 7:15 PM. Please Note New Location and Time: La Casbah Resturaunt (2nd floor), 6 Elm Street, Potsdam.

Science Cafe: Tensors and the "Cocktail Party Problem"

Community Events Imagine you are at a local cafe or in a cocktail party. After a few sips of your latte or martini, you may have already heard which of you neighbors are having an affair or which universities your babysitter has been accepted to while all this time you are enjoying Vivaldi's Four Seasons in the background. You were able to follow several discussions at the cafe in the presence of several sound sources around you. Humans can innately focus on one speaker at a time among a mixture of conversations in a noisy environment. Modern technology tries to mimic this human behavior. This is often called the "cocktail party problem." Join Clarkson University Mathematics Professor Carmeliza Navasca to a lucid discussion of how mathematics and "tensor" computation achieve this, and other equally astonishing feats. For a full schedule of talks visit http://www.clarkson.edu/ScienceCafe. Wednesday, October 6, 2010, 7:15 PM – 8:15 PM. Please note new location and time: La Casbah Restaurant (2nd Floor), 6 Elm Street, Potsdam.

Science Cafe: The CSI Effect: Television and Technology in the Courtroom

Community Events Over the last 15 years television has been inundated with programs that focus on the science of solving crimes. Often those creating the programs misinterpret or embellish the actual state of forensic science, solving unsolvable problems within a matter of a few hours on the program. This has actually led to a measured change in the way prosecutors and defense attorneys select juries, as it is believed that seeing the “fake” science on television has changed jurors attitudes towards forensic evidence in actual cases. Jurors now want to see better scientific results than is actually realistically possible, because they have seen these good results on TV. This phenomenon is known as the “CSI Effect." Join Clarkson University Mathematics Professor Aaron Luttman as he discusses the current state of research on the CSI Effect, and uses a particular example to demonstrate the state of the art in forensic imaging and how it is represented on television and in the courtroom. For a full schedule of talks visit h… Wednesday, October 20, 2010, 7:15 PM – 8:15 PM. Please note new location and time: La Casbah Restaurant (2nd Floor), 6 Elm Street, Potsdam.
