Morning Worship The Reverend Barbara Brown Taylor, an Episcopal priest, is the Butman Professor of Religion at Piedmont College in rural northeast Georgia and the Adjunct Professor of Christian Spirituality at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. Before becoming a teacher in 1997, she spent fifteen years in full time parish ministry. Cavalleria rusticana and I Pagliacci

Chautauqua Opera Our second production of the summer will be the ever-popular double bill of Cavalleria rusticana (Rustic Chivalry) and Pagliacci (The Clowns). In Cavalleria Rusticana, the eternal operatic trio is repeated - Santuzza is rejected by her lover Turridu in favor of the spiteful Lola with tragic results for all. In Pagliacci, Canio the clown is overwhelmed by grief and jealousy when he discovers that Nedda, his young wife, is planning to run away with Silvio. Though these two operas were performed in separate seasons at Chautauqua Opera in the early 1970's, this double-bill has been not been performed together in Norton Hall since 1956. Amphitheater Specials Dion and his music helped to define Rock ‘n’ Roll for a generation in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. R & B, blues, doo-wop and rock n’ roll all influenced his approach to music. First with The Belmonts, creating such classics as “I Wonder Why,” “A Teenager In Love” and ‘Where or When,” then as a solo artist with “Lonely Teenager,” “Runaround Sue,” “The Wanderer,” “Ruby Baby,” “Donna the Prima Donna,” and “Abraham, Martin and John,” he has been recognized as one of rock music’s most authentic legends. Interfaith Lecture Series Week Six — "Public Education: A Moral Imperative" Ronn Richard is the president & CEO of The Cleveland Foundation. Having held over the past 26 years a variety of key management positions in government, the private sector, and the nonprofit sector, early in his career Mr. Richard was a U.S. diplomat serving at the American Consulate General in Osaka/Kobe, Japan and at the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. as a desk officer for North Korean, Greek, and Turkish affairs respectively. He also served in San Francisco as a Pearson Program Fellow where he researched and reported on U.S.-East Asian and U.S.-Latin American trade, investment flows, and technology transfers. In addition to his responsibilities at the Foundation, in January 2009 Mr. Richard was appointed by Governor Strickland to the volunteer temporary post of Infrastructure Czar to oversee the expenditure of the infrastructure components of the federal stimulus funds for Ohio. Audubon Quartet

Logan Chamber Music Series The Audubon Quartet has been pleasing Chautauqua audiences for two decades, and this afternoon will be no exception. In residency with the Chautauqua School of Music, they teach, coach and mentor the students in chamber music. They perform two public performances on the Logan Series that are always a highlight. The quartet is comprised of Ellen Jewett and Akemi Takayama, violins, Doris Lederer, viola and Thomas Shaw, cello. The Dodworth Saxhorn Band is a 17-member 19th century brass band committed to bringing America’s musical past to life. Morning Worship Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III, is pastor of the nationally renowned Abyssinian Baptist Church in the City of New York, and President of SUNY College at Old Westbury. He was one of the founders, and is the current Chairman of the Abyssinian Development Corporation, a comprehensive, community-based not for profit organization, responsible for over $600 million in housing and commercial development in Harlem. He was also instrumental in establishing the Thurgood Marshall Academy for Learning and Social Change – a public, state-of-the-art, intermediate and high school in Harlem, and he is the visionary behind the Thurgood Marshall Academy Lower School, which opened in September 2005. Interfaith Lecture Series Vasudha Narayanan is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Religion at the University of Florida and a past President of the American Academy of Religion (2001-2002). She was educated at the Universities of Madras and Bombay in India and at Harvard University. Venerable Bhikku Bodhi

Interfaith Lecture Series Bhikkhu Bodhi is an American Buddhist monk, originally from New York City, who holds a PhD in philosophy from Claremont Graduate School. In late 1972 he received monastic ordination in Sri Lanka, where he lived for over twenty years. From 1984 until 2002 he was the editor for the Buddhist Publication Society in Kandy, and has translated numerous texts from the Pali Canon into English, among them the complete Samyutta Nikaya. He now lives at Chuang Yen Monastery in upstate New York and teaches there and at Bodhi Monastery in northwest New Jersey. In 2008, together with several of his students, Ven. Appointed by President Ronald Reagan, O’Connor was the first woman to sit on the bench of the nation’s high court. She served from Sept. 25, 1981, until Jan. 31, 2006. This special evening program features Justice O’Connor in conversation with Craig Joyce, who serves as the Andrews Kurth Professor of Law and co-director of the Institute for Intellectual Property & Information at the University of Houston Law Center. Joyce edited O’Connor’s 2003 book The Majesty of the Law. Adam Liptak

Adam Liptak is the Supreme Court correspondent of The New York Times. Since Liptak, a lawyer, joined the Times’ news staff in 2002, he has contributed reporting and analysis on legal matters. He has written the column “Sidebar” since 2007, covering and considering developments in the law. Liptak covered the Supreme Court nominations of John Roberts, Samuel Alito and Sonia Sotomayor; the investigation into the disclosure of the identity of Valerie Wilson, an undercover CIA operative; the trial of Lee Malvo, one of the Washington-area snipers; judicial ethics; and various aspects of the criminal justice system, notably capital punishment. He was a member of the teams that examined the reporting of Jayson Blair and Judith Miller at the Times. Paul Clement

Interfaith Lecture Series Paul D. Clement is a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of King & Spalding, and head of the firm’s national appellate practice. Mr. Clement served as the 43rd Solicitor General of the United States from June 2005 until June 2008. Prior to his confirmation as Solicitor General, he served as Acting Solicitor General for nearly a year and as Principal Deputy Solicitor General for over three years. His more than seven years of service in the Office of Solicitor General is the longest period of continuous service in the Office by a Solicitor General since the Nineteenth Century. He has argued over 50 cases before the United States Supreme Court, including McConnell v. FEC, Tennessee v. Lane, Rumsfeld v. Padilla, Credit Suisse v. Billing, United States v. Booker and MGM v. Having served in pastoral ministry for over twenty-five years, Rev. Labberton was the Senior Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley, California for the past seventeen years before joining the faculty at Fuller. Dr. Labberton cares deeply about God's call for God's people in community to be loving and just manifestations of the Kingdom of God in everyday life, and especially among those facing chronic and acute injustice in our world.
