'Life is in the transitions': William James, 1842-1910
Exhibitions-Current
On view Aug. 16-Dec. 23
Artist, scientist, physician, Harvard professor, psychologist, psychic investigator, philosopher — William James explored multiple vocations in his life-long quest for intellectual clarity and spiritual fulfillment. James is widely acknowledged as one of America's most original and influential thinkers, a man of restless intelligence who championed the new and longed for astonishment.
"'Life is in the transitions': William James 1842-1910," uses the occasion of the 100th anniversary of James' death to look back at the transitional moments of his life: his vocational dilemmas, spiritual crises, professional paths, and brave philosophic sallies forward. The exhibition includes James’ sketches, lecture notes, doodles, his earliest diary, and letters to his brother and future-wife.
The exhibition opening coincides with a conference organized by the William James Society, co-sponsored by the Houghton Library and the Chocorua Community Association, "In the Footsteps of William James,"…

Repo! The Genetic Opera
Theater
A cyberpunk horror backdrop and a catchy goth-industrial soundtrack brought the low-budget movie musical Repo! The Genetic Opera to cult status. Oft lauded as the next Rocky Horror, the film has become a popular choice for shadow-casting. Anthony Head (Giles of Buffy) steals the audience's heart as the Repo Man, Paris Hilton unexpectedly impresses in her role of a bratty heiress not unlike her real-life self, and Sarah Brightman of Phantom of the Opera fame pulls out all the stops as the Genetic Opera's star singer, Blind Mag. Come watch the legal Assassins lovingly mock the film's campy effects, chew the scenery, and give our own twist to the goth scene's new cult favorite.
