Community Bible Study (CBS) is enrolling for their Bible study on the book of Genesis. They will kick off the new class year with an informational meeting 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 2, 2010, at Fifth St. Baptist Church, 5th and Broadway, in Hannibal. Adults of all ages and faiths are invited to learn more about CBS by attending this meeting.
CBS is an interdenominational, non-profit organization whose mission is to make disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ through caring, in-depth Bible study available to all. The Hannibal area condensed class is one of more than 500 adult classes throughout the United States and overseas.
In its 7th year, the local class presently has women and men from various denominations and churches in Hannibal and surrounding communities in Missouri. Illinois residents are welcome also. The class meets on Thursday evenings from September 9 to May 5 with breaks during some holidays. Adults may join any time throughout the class year.
The host church is Fifth Street Baptist Church. CBS is not affiliated with any church or denomination.

Drive One 4 UR School with Carson Motors and Illini West High School

Members of the local Carthage community will have the opportunity to raise money for Illini West by test driving a Ford vehicle. The one-day event takes place on Friday, September 10th at the north side of historic Carthage Square during the homecoming parade festivities. Ford Motor Company and Carson Ford will donate $20 to Illini West for every person from a unique household who test drives a 2011 Taurus, Mustang, Fusion, Focus, Fiesta, Escape, Edge, Flex, or F-Series. The school will be using the proceeds to help fund their athletic and music boosters.

There is no entry fee, no judging but compliments of local businesses there will be free door prizes as well as cash prizes for longest distance, club participation, and muffler rap. Many spectators also attend to view the wide variety of vehicles, talk to owners and enjoy DJ 50’s and 60’s music.

It’s time to clean out your files and clear out your storage rooms! Get ready now for Keokuk’s community-wide Recycling Event on Tuesday, September 14th from 7am until 2pm at the Faith Family Church parking lot. This event is open to all residents of the tri-state region (it’s not just limited to Keokuk), and there is no cost associated with bringing items for recycling.
FOUR recycling stations will accept the following recyclables:
Station 1: Paper Recycling and Secure Document Destruction: Will accept office paper (paper clips & staples OK), corrugated cardboard, phone books, newspaper, magazines, junk mail, clean food boxes and containers, cereal boxes. Not accepting: Carbon paper.
Secure Document Destruction will involve shredding of confidential document (paper clips & staples OK).
Station 2: General Recycling will accept clear glass, tin cans, aluminum and plastics. Bring items in loose in bins. Please don’t mix “regular” trash with general recyclables.
Station 3: E-Waste Recycling will include Electronics such as computer equipment, audio/video equipment, and other misc. electronic equipment. Basically this is anything that plugs into a wall outlet or runs on batteries.
The specific E-waste list includes:
Computer equipment: PCs, monitors, keyboards and mice, printers, copiers, scanners, networking hardware, disk drives, servers, mainframes, computer manuals, fax machines, circuit boards, ink & toner cartridges computer cables and wires
Audio/Video equipment: TVs, cable and satellite equipment, stereos
Misc. electronic equipment: telephones, cell phones, pagers, other miscellaneous electronic equipment, lithium batteries, car batteries.
Station 4: All appliances including microwaves. The Keokuk Lion’s Club will also be accepting donations of old eyeglasses. Household Hazardous Waste collection will also take place (for Lee County, Iowa residents only – no commercial waste). Collection will includes: Rechargeable batteries, cleaners, solvents, oil based paints, lawn and garden products, fluorescent bulbs and thermometers. Appointments are required. Community Bible Study (CBS) is enrolling for their Bible study on the book of Genesis. They will kick off the new class year with an informational meeting 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 2, 2010, at Fifth St. Baptist Church, 5th and Broadway, in Hannibal. Adults of all ages and faiths are invited to learn more about CBS by attending this meeting.
CBS is an interdenominational, non-profit organization whose mission is to make disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ through caring, in-depth Bible study available to all. The Hannibal area condensed class is one of more than 500 adult classes throughout the United States and overseas.
In its 7th year, the local class presently has women and men from various denominations and churches in Hannibal and surrounding communities in Missouri. Illinois residents are welcome also. The class meets on Thursday evenings from September 9 to May 5 with breaks during some holidays. Adults may join any time throughout the class year.
The host church is Fifth Street Baptist Church. CBS is not affiliated with any church or denomination.

“The Human Side of Chemistry: A Portrait of Contemporary Heroes”

With goals of education, inspiration and fun, this talk will focus on a number of famous chemists and will reveal their various personality characteristics and scientific behaviors. Through the use of photographs of famous chemists taken during the last 90 years, the role of various personality and societal factors will be discussed (for example, ego, pride, sincerity, roots and tradition, family, collaboration and competition, social consciousness, and humor). A key part of the presentation will be a video entitled “In the Pursuit of Discovery.” This network quality documentary features three eminent chemists and reveals the essence of their personalities: the late Derek Barton, Carl Djerassi, and Koji Nakanishi.
