<gc:summary type="string">Come, sit, stay for a cocktail-hour that’s going to the dogs…and to the cats! Now, during Houston’s dog-days of summer, experience truly unique specialty cocktails while helping Special Pals animal shelter provide temporary housing and healthcare to homeless dogs and cats. As you enjoy a sampling from this collection of unique, hand-crafted cocktails in the Hilton Americas-Houston’s Lobby Bar, you’ll be making the world a better place by helping homeless puppies and kitties awaiting their forever-homes…and you won’t even need a doggie-bag!

Half of the proceeds from the sale of each of these specialty cocktail collection drinks will be donated to Special Pals, a Houston area non-profit, limited-intake, no-kill animal shelter. The shelter, home to approximately 100 dogs and cats, has been helping homeless and abandoned animals in the Greater Houston area for over 20 years and relies on donations and volunteer support, along with funds generated by special events. As you enjoy a beverage from this delightful cocktail collection available in the Lobby Bar, you will be contributing toward the animals’ medical expenses and helping to provide much needed repairs to the Special Pals animal shelter.

Created especially for this event, cocktails include “Cat Nip, the Purrrrfect Martini” and “Bull Dog” a cocktail made with Red Bull. As you sip one of these delicious beverages you can snack on the bar mix of “Kibbles & Bits” and enjoy light appetizers from the bar. Or, if a tamer, virgin cocktail is more to your liking, a “Spayed/Neutered Daiquiri” and “Spayed/Neutered Colada” are available.

Now, through the end of the year, come in and enjoy one of these delicious cocktails and make a difference in the lives of deserving dogs and cats</gc:summary>

<gc:summary type="string">The English writer Samuel Johnson described man as a "Cooking Animal." For most of us food is more than fuel for our bodies. What we choose to eat depends upon our family traditions, ethnic heritage, and regional customs. Whom we choose to eat with defines our circle of family and friends. The fascinating traveling exhibit, "What's Cookin'? Two Centuries of American Foodways," on view October 7, 2008 – January 24, 2009 in The Heritage Society Museum discusses these food related issues.

Illustrating these topics are photographs, documents, and such actual artifacts as a turn of the 20th century ice cream mold, a fruit jar wrench patented in 1903, an early 20th century silver plated oyster fork, a 1940s cornmeal bag, and several classic food advertisements. See photographs of vintage Houston grocery stores and restaurants, menus and uniforms from favorite local eateries, and an outstanding collection of Houston cookbooks.

The exhibit includes two hands on activities. Visitors can examine several "gadgets of yesteryear" and try to figure out what they were used for. There are also a number of recipe pages from cookbooks; visitors can use clues in the recipes to determine in what year the cookbook may have been published.

The exhibit was developed by the Rogers Historical Museum, Rogers, Arkansas, and supported in part by a grant from the Historical Resources and Museums Services section of Arkansas State Parks in the Department of Parks and Tourism.

This exhibit is made possible with support from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.
