The Wide Open

The Wide Open is an exhibition featuring three of the most accomplished contemporary photographers working today: Lee Friedlander, Lois Conner and Geoffrey James. The works in this exhibition comprise the artists interpretations of the high plains of Northeastern Montana where the American Prairie Reserve is being created.

Susan Stewart (Crow), and Jaune Quick-to-See Smith (Flathead
Salish/Shoshone/Cree). The exhibition will also accentuate the recently published book by The Nicolaysen Art Museum, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith's, She Paints The Horse, which is available in the MAM bookstore.

Tina Hoggatt and Jeffry Mitchell: Shiny, Happy, Pretty

This exhibition is a collaborative project that is inspired and anchored
by a recently completed artist book entitled What is the Panda to You?
by Tina Hoggatt and Jeffry Mitchell. This limited edition book will be
shown in the Shott Gallery accentuating the collaborative nature of
these two artists. The handmade edition of 20 includes letterpress,
silkscreen, woodcuts, flock and collage.
In addition to a collaborative multimedia installation, individual works
from each of these artists will be featured in the Silver Gallery.
Hoggatt and Mitchell bring very different skills to this exhibition, yet
the nature of this project reflects how each artist's expertise is
strengthened and complimented through collaboration. Hoggatt was last
featured in a group exhibition, Out of the Bullpen, at MAM in 2003.
Mitchell was a resident of the Archie Bray Foundation in 2005 and was
recently recognized and featured as a finalist for the Contemporary
Northwest Art Awards at the Portland Art Museum.

Flathead Sled Dog Days 2009

On January 2nd, 3rd and 4th, Whitefish and Olney will be getting a little doggie with the second annual Flathead Sled Dog Days. Friday from 11a.m. to 4p.m. there will be activities at the O’Shaughnessy Cultural Arts Center in Whitefish. This free event is an excellent opportunity to meet the mushers and the dogs. Friday’s activities include a dog skijor demonstration by Glacier Outdoor Center in Depot Park, as well as a trade fair and silent auction in the lobby of the O’Shaughnessy.

The event has two divisions: a 50 mile race for the six dog class and a 100 mile race for the twelve dog class over two days. The teams will be leaving the starting chute at 9 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday from the Olney snowmobile trailhead at mile marker 145.5 highway 93N. From the start they will head out into the Stillwater State Forest and up and over Stryker Ridge. We invite the public to come and watch the teams as they leave the start and return to the finish. Please, for the safety of everyone, do not bring pet dogs to the start of the race.

“Montana Tales,” is presented by The Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation and the Washington Companies, Boone Karlberg, PC, and Southgate Mall, as a benefit for A Carousel for Missoula.
On four evenings in January and February of 2009, legendary Montanans will gather on stage at the University of Montana Theatre, with The University of Montana President George M. Dennison. You are invited to be part of the audience ‘looking through the window’ as they share stories about our state’s fascinating past.
Montana Tales covers state history from Montana’s first people, through frontiersmen, pioneers and settlers, to the glory days of Butte and the establishment of Missoula.
Program dates are Jan. 9 and. 22, and Feb. 4 and 18. Each program begins at 7:30pm. Prior to each performance, a reception will be held backstage, beginning at 6:15pm. Those who have purchased reception-level tickets are invited to enjoy appetizers and beverages and to meet with the evening’s storytellers.

The 6th Annual Travelers' Rest Winter Storytelling Series begins on Saturday, January 3 and continues each Saturday through March. The schedule is a wonderful mix of tribal Elders, local historians and just good storytellers.

Admission is $3 for adults. This year, the Travelers' Rest Preservation and Heritage Association is joining with the Lolo Food Pantry and the Missoula Food Bank, so admission may also be paid in the form of non-perishable food items.

As a special bonus, the 2009 series will be held in the proposed new museum and visitor center for Travelers' Rest. Join us each Saturday!
