Exhibit Opening: "Rev. Badger’s Misfits: Deviations and Diversions"

Exhibit on view through Jan. 5, 2011

Rev. Henry Clay Badger, curator of the Harvard Map Collection from 1889 to 1892, took it as his personal mission to create a classification system for the 14,000 sheet maps under his care. Temperamentally ill-disposed to “floundering,” he devised a scheme to bring order to the chaos of bundled, rolled, and folded maps. Even in the most rigorous cataloging system, however, some materials elude categorization. In Badger’s case, he relegated his misfits to the one part of his scheme not based on geography. In this exhibit, we explore some of the “cartographic curiosities” (maps of nonexistent places, time lines, genealogical tables, comparative charts, lessons in the art of cartography, puzzles, and geographical games) that challenged Badger and continue to challenge his successors.

Architecture's Infestations: Housing Renewal and Pest Control in 1930s London"

How did infestations of vermin influence housing transformation in early 20th century London? This paper centers on the slum clearance and flat building programs instigated by the radical St Pancras House Improvement Society in the 1920s and '30s. The discussion focuses on the actual presence of vermin in the slums, and the representation of certain pests — notably bed bugs — in the society's strikingly experimental propaganda campaigns. Visual and documentary archival analysis reveals tensions between the material presence and consequences of infestations, and the symbolic currency of verminous metaphors within the discourses of urban change.

Children Who Choose Not To Eat Meat

Can young children frame their own choices in terms of moral considerations, particularly when those choices do not match the practices of immediate authority figures? To answer this question, Karen Hussar and Paul Harris studied 6- to 10-year-old independent vegetarians – children who have elected to become vegetarians, despite being raised in non-vegetarian families. Interviews with these children show that they are committed to not eating meat on moral grounds and judge that it would be wrong to break that commitment. Nevertheless, like non-vegetarian children, they remain tolerant toward people who have made no such commitment. Proessor Harris will discuss this intriguing combination of moral autonomy and tolerance.

Cabaret

Take your seat at the Kit Kat Klub, the perfectly marvelous cabaret where singer Sally Bowles meets writer Cliff Bradshaw. As the two pursue a life of pleasure in Weimar Berlin, the world outside the Klub begins to splinter. Sally and Cliff are faced with a choice: abandon themselves to pleasures promised by the cabaret, or open their eyes and face the coming storm. Singer and songwriter Amanda Palmer of Dresden Doll fame stars as the Kit Kat Klub's magnetic Emcee, presiding over the debauched party where nothing is as it seems, with A.R.T. regulars Remo Airaldi, Thomas Derrah, and Jeremy Geidt.

During the Harvard Webinars, "Understanding Harvard’s 2010 Retirement Investment Options" will be presented using a tool called WebEx. WebEx allows for the presentation to be displayed over the web, while you hear the audio portion over the phone using a toll-free number. If you have never used WebEx before, you will be prompted to download a small plug-in so that your web browser can correctly display the presentation. This should take less than one minute to complete.

During the presentation, you will be able to type questions into a text box, much like HARVie Chats. At the end of the presentation, the moderators will address as many of the submitted questions as possible. There is no need to register in advance for these online sessions. Links to WebEx presentations will become active on HARVie approximately 15 minutes prior to the times listed above. Simply click to join.

Introduction by Professor Francis X. Clooney, S.J., Parkman Professor of Divinity and Professor of Comparative Theology and director of the Center for the Study of World Religions. Kriya Yoga, a non-sectarian meditation technique, has been practiced by the seers of the Upanishads, Shri Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita, Maharshi Patanjali in his Yoga Sutra, and many other masters through the ages. Ninety years ago, Paramahamsa Yogananda arrived in Boston, bringing this technique from India to the West. Join us for an engaging presentation by a current successor of this lineage and head of the Kriya Yoga Institute. Doors open at 5:30 PM. All are welcome. Sponsored by the HDS student organization HEART: Honoring Experiential and Alternative Religious Traditions.

Shifting Ground: Peter Zumthor and the Urbanization of the Alps

Projects in the Swiss Alps such as the chapel of Sogn Benedetdg in Sumvitg (1987) and the Thermal Bath in Vals (1996) shaped the image of Peter Zumthor as a quasi-romanticist, anti-urban architect working in remote areas, far away from the hubs of modern life, in a seemingly untouched natural context. What if this image is wrong? Can an analysis of the economic context and the exploitation of the Alps in the late 20th century by the tourist and energy industry help to revise this image? Was Henri Lefebvre right with his prophecy of the "complete urbanization"?
