Islamic Calligraphy and the Qur'an

Traces of the Calligrapher: Islamic Calligraphy in Practice, c. 1600–1900 presents elegant and masterful works of calligraphy alongside the finely rendered tools used to create them, such as inkwells, penknives, burnishers, and paper scissors. The accompanying exhibition Writing the Word of God: Calligraphy and the Qur'an brings to light key developments in the Islamic scripts from Spain to North Africa and to Greater Iran through a selection of folios from Qur'ans dating from the seventh century to the fifteenth century. Together, these exhibitions reveal the significant role of calligraphy and calligraphers in the Islamic lands across several centuries and two continents.

Campus Peace Vigil

"STAND with ME-Members of Emory" began our campus Peace Vigil in 2006. We meet for 15 minutes every Tuesday during the lunch period (currently at 12 noon).
You can find us adjacent the bell tower of the Cox Hall food court on Emory University's central campus (in the rare event of inclement weather in the foyer of the Woodruff Library).
We are a single-issue campus group focused on protesting and reporting on the war in Iraq and keeping vigil in memory of the dead killed in the war. Most of our brief time is committed to a few moments of silence in addition to reading the names of U.S. military killed in Iraq and Afghanistan during the preceding week(s). While we continue to read this list we also invite more inclusive categories including Iraqi and Afghan citizens and other coalition forces involved.
Time-permitting we also share information, updates, and personal reflections. Participants are encouraged to bring banners, posters or appropriate music and are welcome to distribute fliers or leaflets (if unrelated to the war, priority will be given to our single-issue purpose).

“A letter to Elia” and “Viva Zapata!”

Martin Scorsese and Kent Jones' “A Letter to Elia” is a heartfelt declaration from one great American filmmaker to another, as Scorsese speaks candidly and passionately about one of his formative filmmaking influences: the late Elia Kazan. Utilizing precisely chosen clips from Kazan's signature films, and interview footage of the director himself, Scorsese and Jones recount the director's tumultuous journey from the Group Theatre to the Hollywood A-list to the thicket of the blacklist. But most of all, they make a powerful case for Kazan as a profoundly personal artist working in a famously impersonal industry. (dirs. Martin Scorsese and Kent Jones, U.S., 2010, color and b&w, 60 min. digital); “A Letter to Elia” will be followed by a screening of Kazan’s “Viva Zapata” (dir. Elia Kazan, U.S. , 1952, b&w, 113 min., 35mm). Novelist John Steinbeck wrote the screenplay for this biopic of Mexican Revolutionary Emilano Zapata. Marlon Brando, recognized as Best Actor at the 1952 Cannes Film Festival stars in the title role of the modest but determined hero of the revolution, and Anthony Quinn, who earned a Best Supporting Actor ACADEMY AWARD®, co-stars as Emilano ‘s hard-living brother, Eufemio. Despite his efforts to give the film authenticity—Kazan reportedly studied Agustin Casasola’s period photographs—the film contains such historical inaccuracies as depicting Zapata as illiterate. A double feature film screening presented by the Department of Film Studies at Emory University & 20th Century For Home Entertainment. Free shuttle service to the Plaza Theater will be provided for Emory students, faculty and staff; details TBA, courtesy of Atlanta Link.

Lecture by Dr. Theo Parades

Peruvian anthropologist Dr. Theo Parades delivers a lecture entitled Kantupata, Beyond Machu Picchu. Kantupata, a small citadel in the cloud forest within the Machu Picchu sanctuary, was hidden by the jungle until 2005. The site is impressive for its sheer beauty and its
integration of architecture and environment. Its layout shows elements commonly found in Inca architecture: rectangular enclosures built around a central square, a plaza, a triangular main square below the ground level, huacas (sacred objects relating the site to the land around
it), terraces, and still-functioning water fountains.
