DESCRIPTION:"STAND with ME-Members of Emory" began our campus Peace Vigi
l in 2006. We meet for 15 minutes every Tuesday during the lunch period
(currently at 12 noon). \nYou can find us adjacent the bell tower of th
e Cox Hall food court on Emory University's central campus (in the rare
event of inclement weather in the foyer of the Woodruff Library). \nWe a
re a single-issue campus group focused on protesting and reporting on th
e war in Iraq and keeping vigil in memory of the dead killed in the war.
Most of our brief time is committed to a few moments of silence in addi
tion to reading the names of U.S. military killed in Iraq and Afghanista
n during the preceding week(s). While we continue to read this list we a
lso invite more inclusive categories including Iraqi and Afghan citizens
and other coalition forces involved.\nTime-permitting we also share inf
ormation\, updates\, and personal reflections. Participants are encourag
ed to bring banners\, posters or appropriate music and are welcome to di
stribute fliers or leaflets (if unrelated to the war\, priority will be
 given to our single-issue purpose).

DESCRIPTION:Martin Scorsese and Kent Jones' “A Letter to Elia” is a hear
tfelt declaration from one great American filmmaker to another\, as Scor
sese speaks candidly and passionately about one of his formative filmmak
ing influences: the late Elia Kazan. Utilizing precisely chosen clips f
rom Kazan's signature films\, and interview footage of the director hims
elf\, Scorsese and Jones recount the director's tumultuous journey from
the Group Theatre to the Hollywood A-list to the thicket of the blacklis
 t. But most of all\, they make a powerful case for Kazan as a profoundly
personal artist working in a famously impersonal industry. (dirs. Marti
 n Scorsese and Kent Jones\, U.S.\, 2010\, color and b&w\, 60 min. digita
l)\; “A Letter to Elia” will be followed by a screening of Kazan’s “Viva
  Zapata” (dir. Elia Kazan\, U.S. \, 1952\, b&w\, 113 min.\, 35mm). Nove
list John Steinbeck wrote the screenplay for this biopic of Mexican Revo
lutionary Emilano Zapata. Marlon Brando\, recognized as Best Actor at t
he 1952 Cannes Film Festival stars in the title role of the modest but d
etermined hero of the revolution\, and Anthony Quinn\, who earned a Best
Supporting Actor ACADEMY AWARD®\, co-stars as Emilano ‘s hard-living br
other\, Eufemio. Despite his efforts to give the film authenticity—Kaza
n reportedly studied Agustin Casasola’s period photographs—the film cont
ains such historical inaccuracies as depicting Zapata as illiterate. A d
ouble feature film screening presented by the Department of Film Studies
at Emory University & 20th Century For Home Entertainment. Free shuttl
e service to the Plaza Theater will be provided for Emory students\, fac
ulty and staff\; details TBA\, courtesy of Atlanta Link.

DESCRIPTION:Peruvian anthropologist Dr. Theo Parades delivers a lecture
entitled Kantupata\, Beyond Machu Picchu. Kantupata\, a small citadel in
the cloud forest within the Machu Picchu sanctuary\, was hidden by the
jungle until 2005. The site is impressive for its sheer beauty and its\n
integration of architecture and environment. Its layout shows elements c
ommonly found in Inca architecture: rectangular enclosures built around
 a central square\, a plaza\, a triangular main square below the ground l
evel\, huacas (sacred objects relating the site to the land around\nit)
 \, terraces\, and still-functioning water fountains.
