"Who's Driving?" Legendary Cars & Legendary Stars

The Golden Age of Trucking Museum will be hosting “Who’s Driving?” Legendary Stars and Legendary Cars an exhibit of portraits on canvas by artist Chris Osborne. The exhibit will be on display in The Founder’s Gallery at 1101 Southford Road in Middlebury, Conn through December of 2010.
Recipient of the 2007 National Society of Painters in Casein & Acrylic (NSPCA) Prize, the Classic Car Club of America 2003 Fine Art Award of Excellence, and the Glenmoor Gathering (Ohio) 2007 Best of Show award, Chris Osborne pays homage to the American automobile by way of the art of portraiture. “There are key things in American culture that absorb my attention, the fabulous cars of decades past, the colorful people who drove them, the Hollywood Golden Age, and the true American musical genres, Jazz & Blues. Any combination of these elements may appear in my work. After exhaustive factual research and the use of figurative models, I like to apply an imaginative view of history, bringing to the present a candid moment in time shared with the viewer.”
Raised in New Milford, Connecticut, Osborne received a BA in Art from Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson NY and an MFA in printmaking from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After an extended stay on Martha’s Vineyard in the 1970’s, she moved to New York City, working with legendary artist’s agent Jane Lander representing a group of illustrators with a preference toward fine art. This pivotal move guided Chris toward figurative drawing and painting, and in the mid-1980’s she left the agent profession to pursue art on her own. Over the decade of the 1990’s Chris supplemented her work by managing the Jazz & Blues department at Tower Records Lincoln Center, the largest retail record store in New York, which put her significantly in the midst of the music world. It was an experience that will forever enrich her painting, as she is currently working on a history of Jazz and a history of Blues in visual form, decade by decade, city by city, with the American automobile as a natural focal point.
Chris has exhibited widely in galleries and art associations in the Northeast and New York City, along with invitational exhibits at annual Collector Car events such as the Kruse Auction in Auburn, Indiana, the Louisville Concours d’Elegance, the Hamptons Concours d’Elegance, the Glenmoor Gathering of Significant Automobiles, the Las Vegas Concours d’Elegance, the Fairfield County Concours d’Elegance, and the Classic Car Club of America annual gathering in Hickory Corners, Michigan. She was the CCCA poster artist for 2005. In April & May of 2006 the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum and Kruse Museum in Indiana exhibited her work in a solo show.
Regular museum admission applies and members are always free. For questions please contact the museum at 203-577-2181 or visit the web site at www.goldenagetruckmuseum.com. The Golden Age of Trucking Museum is a non-profit organization and open year round Tuesday through Saturday 10-4 and Sunday 12-4.

IMAX movie "Hubble"

Built in part in Danbury, it’s been circling the earth – and advancing our understanding of the universe – for nearly 20 years. Attendants are encouraged to bring a yoga journal and a desire to make clear changes in their own life.

"The Law of Attraction theorizes that thoughts (both conscious and unconscious, positive or negative) dictate the reality of one's own life, whether or not someone is aware of it. Widespread popular interest for the law of attraction reached its peak after the release of the movie, The Secret. After the film's release, the book, Law of Attraction: The Basics of the Teachings of Abraham, by Esther Hicks and Jerry Hicks made the New York Times Best Sellers list, drawing more attention and interest to this topic. In 2007, Oprah Winfrey began a series of interviews during her talk show on the law of attraction."

Linda Busk is a licensed social worker and her methods have been influenced by both Eastern and Western philosophies.
IMAX movie "Hubble"

Built in part in Danbury, it’s been circling the earth – and advancing our understanding of the universe – for nearly 20 years. Now, the Hubble Space Telescope has returned to Fairfield County and shares its celestial wonders in the IMAX movie “Hubble” at The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk.

“Hubble” takes audiences through distant galaxies at 11 a.m. and 1 & 3 p.m. daily through June 24 on the Aquarium’s six-story screen – the largest in Connecticut.

“With its ability to look deep into space with great clarity, the Hubble Space Telescope has had a profound impact on the way we view the universe and ourselves,” said Chris Loynd, the Aquarium’s marketing director. “It’s only fitting that some of Hubble’s discoveries be shared in a format that also is unmatched in its size and clarity: on IMAX film.”

“Hubble” was filmed by NASA astronauts aboard the space shuttle Atlantis in May 2009. Through the power of the immersive IMAX format, audiences will almost feel the weightlessness of space, but also the weighty task facing the space-walking astronauts assigned to carry out the final mission to update the telescope. “Hubble” also offers an incredible never-before-seen “flight” through Hubble imagery, providing a first-person journey from the Orion Nebula to the far reaches of our universe.

The Hubble Space Telescope has been called the most important scientific instrument since Galileo’s original telescope. Named after American astronomer Edwin Hubble, the telescope was designed to operate above Earth's turbulent and obscuring atmosphere and to observe celestial objects at ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared wavelengths. It was launched aboard the space shuttle Discovery on April 24, 1990, and deployed into orbit the next day.

Hubble’s Danbury Connection
Hubble's primary mirror and optical system was built by the Perkin-Elmer Corp. in Danbury. (That Perkin-Elmer business is now Goodrich Corp. ISR Systems in Danbury.) The 2009 Hubble servicing mission that was filmed in IMAX for “Hubble” included the installation of a new fine guidance sensor – built in Danbury by Goodrich ISR Systems – that will add years of productive life to the telescope.

“Hubble” is an IMAX Corp. and Warner Bros. Pictures production, in cooperation with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

The film is narrated by actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

NPR Comedian Paula Poundstone

The Levitt Pavilion in Westport, CT is proud to welcome comedian Paula Poundstone for the 3rd Annual Stand Up for Homes with Hope on Friday, September 10th. All the proceeds from the evening go to support the programs and services for the homeless and those at-risk of homelessness operated by homes with Hope.

It’s impossible to attend a Paula Poundstone performance without marveling at her ability to interact spontaneously with audience members in conversations bound to garner riotous laughter. Armed with nothing but a stool, a microphone and a can of Diet Pepsi, Paula’s ability to create humor on the spot has become the stuff of legend. Little wonder people leave Paula’s shows debating whether the random people she talked to were “plants” – which, of course they never are, and complaining that their cheeks hurt from laughter.
Poundstone's razor-sharp wit makes her a perfect fit as a regular panelist on NPR’s popular weekly news quiz show, “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me.” (2008 winner of the prestigious Peabody Award for broadcasting excellence) Her first book, "There’s Nothing in This Book That I Meant to Say," (with foreword by Mary Tyler Moore) is out in paperback and on (Highbridge) audio after a year of successful sales. Paula is hard at work on her second tomb for the same imprint. (Harmony Books, a division of Random House) Paula’s commentaries have been heard on NPR’s “Morning Edition” and her blogs appear in the Huffington Post, and 23/6, as well as the NPR Opinion Page. Awards and distinctions: First woman to perform at the White House correspondent’s dinner; first woman to win a cable ACE for Best Standup Comedy Performance. Paula is also an Emmy and Ace Award winner for Best Program Interviewer. TV appearances include several standup comedy specials (HBO, and Bravo), her own show on HBO and ABC, and all the major talk shows. In 2010 Paula was invited to serve as judge in the humor category of this year's Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The Awards are the largest, longest running recognition and scholarship program for teenage artists & writers. Paula has been recognized as one of Comedy Central’s 100 greatest stand ups of all time! Poundstone also released her first comedy CD: I HEART JOKES: Paula Tells Them In Maine, 60 minutes of hilarious comedy recorded live at the sensational Stone Mountain Arts Center – because as Paula says, “It’s very hard to do it any other way.” Showtime: 9:00PM Tickets: $45 & $100 visit www.hwhct.org or call: 203-226-3426
The Levitt Pavilion is located at 40 Jesup Road Westport, CT 06880

McCullouch Farm Horse Versatility Event

The Versatility Event is a series of performances to show many different styles and sports that Morgans engage in. These include Jumping, Western, English styles of riding and a display of all the colors of the breed. Visitors will also see a beautiful young black stallion, our 2010 colt in training, horses negotiating obstacles found on a trail, dressage horses, a musical ride and demonstrations of the fun we have with training young horses. All of the activities are explained so the audience can understand what the handlers are demonstrating. A key part of the Versatility Event has always been to educate people who love horses, but don't know enough about them.
