"Solving KenKen as Epistemological Inquiry: (Sudoku) Logic + Math = Metaphor”

KenKen is a logic puzzle that has been described as sudoku + math. (Sudoku is a puzzle that is solved using pure logic. And KenKen overlays basic arithmetic on a sudoko-like matrix.) The rules are simple, but solving advanced KenKen puzzles requires far more than basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. And despite the fact that a basic premise is that one should never have to guess when solving a puzzle based on pure logic and math, the much more complex reality is that one cannot solve a “diabolical” sudoku or KenKen puzzle without resorting to provisional answers—guesses that might turn out to be inconsistent with what could be called the "background theory" of the matrix as a whole, in which changing the number assigned to any given cell could potentially affect every other cell in the grid. In short, solving KenKen puzzles serves as a metaphor for unexpected comparisons with the Coherence Theory of Truth, and raises questions about epistemological inquiry in general. Does metaphorical reasoning apply to math and logic? Are math and logic no different from other “social constructs,” in which many truths are relative? Or is the lesson learned just the opposite: that important distinctions must be made, for example, between our reliance on provisional truths (and the impossibility of absolute certainty) and the belief (that since there is always an epistemological gap between the perceiving subject and the object or “truth” to be known) that all truths are equally relative?

Human Foraging Behavior in External and Internal Search Tasks

Abstract: When resources are distributed in patches animals must decide when to switch from a depleted patch. The optimal policy is given by the Marginal Value Theorem, which has successfully predicted animal behaviors, but as a mechanism it becomes problematic when each patch contains few discrete prey items. Biologists have proposed simple alternative decision mechanisms and calculated in which environments each works well. Here, we study the mechanisms that underlie human foraging behavior and test whether the strategies directing animals when to leave a food patch also underlie human decision-making when foraging for resources. We present results from two experiments, which differed in whether search was external (i.e. finding physical objects) or internal (i.e. retrieving information from memory), but whose environmental parameters were closely matched. In both tasks, subjects tended to use decision strategies that were appropriate to the type of resource distributions most commonly found in nature.

Drosophila and their nematode enemies: Spiroplasma to the rescue

Abstract: Nematodes are probably the most abundant, diverse, and destructive macroparasites of plants and animals. One of their victims is Drosophila neotestacea, a mushroom-feeding insect that is common across forests of Canada and the northern U.S. (including Potsdam). These flies are frequently parasitized by nematodes (Howardula aoronymphium), which cause sterility of parasitized females. However, D. neotestacea that carry Spiroplasma, a maternally transmitted bacterial symbiont, are resistant to the sterilizing effect of nematode parasitism. Several lines of evidence suggest that Spiroplasma is spreading in North American populations of D. neotestacea. Thus, D. neotestacea is adapting to nematode parasitism, not by the spread of favorable mutations within its nuclear genome, but by spread of a maternally transmitted endosymbiont. Our results show that defensive symbionts can have profound and rapid effects on their host populations. Such symbionts may be major players in the ecology of species interactions.

Science Cafe: Tensors and the "Cocktail Party Problem"

Imagine you are at a local cafe or in a cocktail party. After a few sips of your latte or martini, you may have already heard which of you neighbors are having an affair or which universities your babysitter has been accepted to while all this time you are enjoying Vivaldi's Four Seasons in the background. You were able to follow several discussions at the cafe in the presence of several sound sources around you. Humans can innately focus on one speaker at a time among a mixture of conversations in a noisy environment.

Modern technology tries to mimic this human behavior. This is often called the "cocktail party problem." Join Clarkson University Mathematics Professor Carmeliza Navasca to a lucid discussion of how mathematics and "tensor" computation achieve this, and other equally astonishing feats.
