The American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands Chapter is organizing a number of training courses this winter. Classes include CPR, AED and First Aid training and Chokesaver for Restaurant Emergencies courses.

The American Red Cross, Cape Cod and Islands Chapter, is once again looking for nominations for local Heroes. These Heroes will be recognized at the upcoming Ninth Annual Heroes Breakfast on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at the Resort and Conference Center at Hyannis, MA from 7:00-9:00 A.M.

The Red Cross touches lives in our community every day through programs and services such as disaster relief and health and safety training. As an organization committed to helping the community, the Red Cross is honored to salute individuals who are making a difference through their actions.

All Heroes must live on Cape Cod, Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard and the heroic act must have been performed between December 15th, 2009 and December 21st, 2010. The nominating committee will select the Heroes for 2010 in the following award categories but additional or different categories can be added if relevant:

“It Isn’t Easy Being Green”
Ecumenical Worship Service to Assist Gulf Coast Residents

A wide variety of Martha’s Vineyard Churches are planning an ecumenical worship service at the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs, titled “It Isn’t Easy Being Green”, which will take place at 11:00AM on Sunday, September 5th, to celebrate the fragile beauty of Creation and to raise awareness and financial assistance for residents along the Gulf of Mexico whose livelihoods have been severely affected by the B.P. oil spill.

The Rt. Rev. Barbara C. Harris (www.edow.org…), retired Suffragan (Assistant) Bishop of The Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts will be the guest Preacher and Celebrant. The service will feature a jazz ensemble under the leadership of Wes Nagy, Director of Music at Grace Episcopal Church, Vineyard Haven, and an all-Island community choir under the direction of Phil Dietterrich.

The free-will offering will be donated to Community Services of Louisiana to provide direct assistance in the form of food and fuel to fishermen and other workers whose livelihoods have been impacted or eliminated as a result of the oil spill. Donation checks may be made out to ECSLA and brought to the Tabernacle the day of the event.

The worship service will be followed by a community picnic on the Tabernacle grounds with hamburgers, hot dogs and beverages provided. Attendees are asked to bring a summer dish to share if they are able, as well as blankets and/or lawn chairs to use during the picnic on the grounds.

Free tickets are available from the following sponsoring churches: Grace Episcopal Church, Vineyard Haven; Trinity Episcopal Chapel, Oak Bluffs; St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Edgartown; Trinity United Methodist Church, Oak Bluffs; West Tisbury Congregational Church; The Federated Church, Edgartown; The Unitarian Universalist Society, Vineyard Haven.

Museum Opening Maritime Art Exhibit

The only fully furnished Sea Captain’s home open to the public on Cape Cod provides an intimate glance into mid 1800s family life in eight rooms. The parlors are arranged as if the captain was just returning from his voyage to China, likely 16 to 18 months duration. His gentleman’s study waits for him. A Benefit Concert for Outer Cape Health Services - Wellfleet's own - The Parkington Sisters in Concert

The Lower Cape raised and classically trained Parkington Sisters will perform at Chequessett Yacht & Country Club, as a benefit for OCHS. With influences from Stravinsky to Radiohead, the Parkington Sisters create an “aural experience that is both magnetic in its delivery and genuine in its emotional impact”. Seeded from a generation of musicians, Lydia, Rose, Nora, Sarah and Ariel Parkington were raised in a very musical household that led them from stints in eclectic rock bands to performances with symphonies and string quartets.

Despite their extensive musical background, it wasn’t until 2005 that they began performing instrumentals together for the first time on the salty streets of Provincetown. Combining their diverse tastes, the sisters soon realized the potential for combining five dynamic voices with five confident instruments. Lydia plays cello, Rose guitar and piano, Ariel, Sarah and Nora play violin and viola. Nonetheless, all are multi-instrumentalists and their music is embodied by vibrant string arrangements combined with tight, interwoven five-part vocal harmonies, and gorgeous, blending voices.
