Full Description: Casey follows the extreme surfers (including world class surfer Laird Hamilton) who fly around the world trying to ride the ocean’s giant waves and the scientists who are urgently trying to understand their destructive powers., From the tsunami that killed 250,000 people in the Pacific in 2004 to the 1740-foot wave that recently leveled part of the Alaskan coast, Casey takes readers on a journey around the world as the surfers ride monster waves in California, Hawaii and Tahiti. She talks to sources including a marine salvage expert in South Africa, a scientist at the National Oceanography Center in Southampton England who experienced the largest recorded waves in history while on a research vessel., Casey’s first book, the New York Times bestseller "The Devil’s Teeth," was about the time she spent following two biologists and their pioneering field research on great white sharks in the Farallon Islands. Full Description: Fullington will introduce Director’s Choice, PNB’s fall program of four ballets, through an informal lecture and recorded film excerpts. Two works choreographed by Jiri Kylian to the music of Mozart are the "Petite Mort", a returning favorite whose choreography includes six men, six women, and six fencing foils; and a PNB premiere, "Sechs Tänze (Six Dances)", a comic tour de force utilizing bubbles, powdered wigs, and rolling ball gowns., PNB premiere "Glass Pieces", choreographed by Jerome Robbins to three works by Phillip Glass, evokes poetry through dancer groupings and movement progressions. Audience-favorite "Jardí Tancat", choreographed by Nacho Duato, rounds out the program with powerful signature work danced to traditional Catalonian songs., Audience comments and questions are welcome.

One of the most taught -- and frequently challenged -- books of the last 50 years, this book has been voted the best novel of the 20th century by librarians across the country., This event will include remarks by author/actress Stephanie Kallos ("Broken for You"), who noted that the novel is "one of my most beloved favorites -- of course I'm hardly the only person to make that claim! -- and I read it aloud to my sons just last summer.", The program will also feature an excerpt from "Scout, Atticus and Boo," a documentary by Mary Murphy, and a complete screening of the classic 1962 film of "To Kill a Mockingbird" starring Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch., This event is presented in partnership with HarperCollins Publishers and The Elliott Bay Book Co. Full Description: “Ape House” tells the story of a special family of bonobo apes, who like others of their species, not only reason and form deep relationships but also communicate in American Sign Language., When an explosion rocks the Great Ape Language Lab, scientist Isabel Duncan is severely injured and her beloved bonobos escape, only to be kidnapped and turned into the subjects of a reality television show. The show is a phenomenal hit. Millions watch the bonobos order cheeseburgers, fries, pizza, and M&Ms, engage in copious amounts of sex, and sign for Isabel to come get them. Gruen, a devoted animal lover, has held a life-long fascination with human-ape discourse. Her particular interest lies with bonobo apes, who share 99.4% of our DNA. She visited the Great Ape Trust in Des Moines, Iowa to learn about the collaboration between humans and apes in various fields, including language and cognition. Gruen is one of few to have been invited in to meet the resident apes...by the apes themselves., This program is presented in partnership with The Elliott Bay Book Company.
