DESCRIPTION:Martin Scorsese and Kent Jones' “A Letter to Elia” is a hear
tfelt declaration from one great American filmmaker to another\, as Scor
sese speaks candidly and passionately about one of his formative filmmak
ing influences: the late Elia Kazan. Utilizing precisely chosen clips f
rom Kazan's signature films\, and interview footage of the director hims
elf\, Scorsese and Jones recount the director's tumultuous journey from
the Group Theatre to the Hollywood A-list to the thicket of the blacklis
 t. But most of all\, they make a powerful case for Kazan as a profoundly
personal artist working in a famously impersonal industry. (dirs. Marti
 n Scorsese and Kent Jones\, U.S.\, 2010\, color and b&w\, 60 min. digita
l)\; “A Letter to Elia” will be followed by a screening of Kazan’s “Viva
  Zapata” (dir. Elia Kazan\, U.S. \, 1952\, b&w\, 113 min.\, 35mm). Nove
list John Steinbeck wrote the screenplay for this biopic of Mexican Revo
lutionary Emilano Zapata. Marlon Brando\, recognized as Best Actor at t
he 1952 Cannes Film Festival stars in the title role of the modest but d
etermined hero of the revolution\, and Anthony Quinn\, who earned a Best
Supporting Actor ACADEMY AWARD®\, co-stars as Emilano ‘s hard-living br
other\, Eufemio. Despite his efforts to give the film authenticity—Kaza
n reportedly studied Agustin Casasola’s period photographs—the film cont
ains such historical inaccuracies as depicting Zapata as illiterate. A d
ouble feature film screening presented by the Department of Film Studies
at Emory University & 20th Century For Home Entertainment. Free shuttl
e service to the Plaza Theater will be provided for Emory students\, fac
ulty and staff\; details TBA\, courtesy of Atlanta Link.

DESCRIPTION:This study examines film culture and its relation to urban s
pace in Paris\, movie capital of Europe\, during the first decade of sou
nd cinema. For his Dr. Smoodin will concentrate on the year 1933 to eva
luate film programs and attendance across Parisian neighborhoods\, from
the working class north to the Jewish Marais to the picture palaces of t
he Right Bank and art house cine-clubs of the Left Bank. This presentati
on will confront notions of national vs. urban vs. neighborhood culture
and explain historiographic challenges to evaluating the links between f
ilm\, modernity\, and the growth of the city\, with Paris as a most pert
inent locus for those discussions. Sponsored by the Department of Film S
tudies\, the Department of French and Italian\, and the Department of Hi
story at Emory University. \n\nParking near White Hall is available for

DESCRIPTION:The lecture\, given by Andrew Stewart\, Professor of Greek A
rt\, University of California\, Berkeley\, explores some aspects of the
representation of war and warriors in archaic Greece (ca. 800-480 B.C.)
\, looking at the Greek warrior ethic\, the phalanx and its representatio
ns\, and the popular but puzzling figure of the solitary hoplite. Since
archaic Greek warfare was a mass affair where formation and discipline c
ounted for everything\, the solitary hoplite is both an anomaly and an a
nachronism. Or is he? The speaker will examine the ever-present specter
of death and the warrior’s code of honor\, with a side glance at his mem
orialization in funerary sculpture. The lecture concludes with the Persi
an Wars (490-479) and the battle imagery generated in response to them.

DESCRIPTION:This 90-minute performance features 12 Korean music and danc
e numbers performed by 12 performing artists. Handed down from generatio
n to generation\, the movements of Dynamic Korea: Dance & Song reflect t
he essential rhythms of traditional Korean dance. The exuberant yŏtt’ary
ŏngch’um (Taffy Peddler Dance) walks audiences through the bustling mark
etplaces of Korea\, while meditative\, deeply symbolic performances such
as the hwahyŏnmu (Lotus Dance) and sŭngmu (Monk’s Dance) explore the co
untry's deep Buddhist roots. From the gentle\, gliding grace of the open
ing chaech’ŏnmu (Chosŏn Court Dance) to the thunderous drumming of the c
losing p’unggo\, the dancers and musicians of the Chae Hyang Soon Dance
Company are animated by the strength and energy of the Korean tradition.

 Korea Society is a private\, nonprofit\, nonpartisan\, 501(c)(3) organiz
ation with individual and corporate members that is dedicated solely to
the promotion of greater awareness\, understanding and cooperation betw

ring it would endanger his career\; the film upset the House Un-American

DESCRIPTION:(Documentary\, China\, 1996\, 100 minutes\, color\, Tibetan
& Chinese with English subtitles)\n\nThis cinema vérité documentary is a
study of the day-to-day workings of the Barkhor Street Neighborhood Com
mittee\, located in the heart of Lhasa\, as it implements official Chine
se government policy\, organizes religious and secular events\, and atte
mpts to mediate and solve local conflicts. Shot with only one camera\,
and influenced by the ‘observational mode’ of Frederick Wiseman\, this
remarkable work by Chinese director Duan Jinchuan provides rare insight
into Lhasa’s rapidly changing society through the experiences of ordinar
y people. In particular it elegantly conveys the intimate\, politically
charged\, yet often humorous interactions between citizens and cadres.
In 1997\, Duan won the Grand Prix du Festival du Réel (Paris) for No. 1
6 Barkhor South Street. \n\nDuan Jinchuan was born in Chengdu\, China.
After graduating from Beijing Broadcasting Institute in 1984\, he worked
at Tibet TV Station. In 1992\, he returned to Beijing and became an in
dependent documentary filmmaker. Seen as one of the pillars of the ‘New
Documentary Movement’ in China\, he has made numerous films\, most of w
hich explore the relationship between institutions and individuals. Acc
ording to Duan\, he is a member of “the avant-garde\, post-1989 movement
of documentary makers . . . . [who have] found that the reality of Chin
ese history is completely different from what we learned in school. So
\,” he notes\, “we feel we have a responsibility to convey reality.” \n
 \nIntroduction and Q & A by Tawni Tidwell\, doctoral student in anthropol

DESCRIPTION:The Film: Steamboat Bill\, Jr. stars Buster Keaton and was
directed by Keaton and Charles Reisner. Independently produced by Keato
n and was released through United Artists in 1928\, it was Keaton's last
independent production. When it failed to make back the large sums Kea
ton had invested in some of the most extraordinary special effects of hi
s career\, he moved to M-G-M\, where he quickly lost creative control.
Though the film failed to impress the likes of New York Times critic Mor
daunt Hall (who suggested that the audience was as stone faced as Keaton
) the film is today considered one of Keaton's greatest comic achievemen
ts. It is 71 minutes.\n\nThe Pianist: Donald Sosin is one of the forem
ost silent film accompanists working today. He is in heavy demand by su
ch prestige distributors of silent films as Kino International and the C
riterion Collection. You can hear him on DVD accompanying such classics
as Nosferatu\, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari\, von Stroheim's Blind Husba
 nds\, Warning Shadows\, Fritz Lang's Spies\, DeMille's King of Kings\, f
our Criterion Edition releases by Yasajiro Ozu including A Story of Floa
ting Weeds\, and many\, many more. You can also hear him play annually
at such international film festivals as Bologna and Pordenone\, where he
is flying off to perform after playing for us. \n\nThis screening kicks
off the Emory Cinematheque International Film Series\, Wednesday nights
at 7:30. In 35mm and free and open to the public. Parking near White
Hall is available for free starting at 7 p.m. in the brand new Oxford Ro
 ad parking deck.

DESCRIPTION:In the early 30’s\, Montgomery Clift\, an idealistic young f
ield administrator for the Tennessee Valley Authority comes to a small t
own to enforce the clearing of the land to be flooded by a new dam on th
e Tennessee River. He encounters opposition from Jo Ann Fleet\, an elde
rly woman who refuses to sell her land to the government and others who
object to his employment (with pay) of local black laborers. Notable for
Ellsworth Fredrick’s riveting Cinemascope landscapes—shot on location i
n the Tennessee Valley—the film’s dramatic arch links the relationship o
f Nature with the role of the individual in the United States. A doubl
e feature film screening presented by the Department of Film Studies at
Emory University & 20th Century For Home Entertainment. Free shuttle se
rvice to the Plaza Theater will be provided for Emory students\, faculty

DESCRIPTION:(Feature\, China\, 2006\, 108 minutes\, color\, Tibetan with
English subtitles) \n\nSetting Hamlet in early Tibetan history\, Prince
of the Himalayas is richly suggestive of the enduring relevance of Shak
espeare's classic tragedy for the modern world. The film\, which is Chi
nese director Sherwood Hu’s first about Tibet\, is a visually ravishing
historical epic with stunning scenery and lush costumes. Particularly
noteworthy is that this feature is the most successful example so far of
artistic cooperation between a Chinese director and Tibetan writers (Do
rje Tsering Chenaktshang and Tashi Dawa). Moreover\, the actors are al
l Tibetan\, they speak in their native tongue\, and the entire film was
shot inside Tibet. The film has won numerous awards at international fi
lm festivals\, and was nominated for a Golden Globe.\n \nSherwood Hu wa
s born in Shanghai and raised by an artistic family. He received his MA
degree from New York State University and his Ph.D. in directing from th
e University of Hawaii at Manoa. He also studied at The Public Theater i
n New York under Joseph Papp. He has directed several feature films\, i
ncluding Lani Loa\, or “The Passage\,” which was produced by Francis For
d Coppola and Wayne Wang\, and was one of the first U.S./China co-produc

here he supervises graduate students. \n\nParking near White Hall is ava
